In most cases, it is not recommended to keep a vehicle with an automatic transmission (AT) in Park (P) with the engine running. This may lead to the following problems:
* Overheating: Automatic transmission clutches rotate constantly while the engine is running, which can cause heat buildup and possible damage.
* Increased wear: If the vehicle is in park and the engine is running, the transmission continues to transmit torque to the wheels, which can lead to premature wear of automatic transmission components.
* Reduced efficiency: Keeping the engine idling with the automatic transmission engaged is ineffective, as it burns fuel and does not move the car.
When is it permissible to keep the automatic transmission in park with the engine running:
* For short periods of time, such as when clearing snow from a windshield or warming up the engine in cold weather.
* In the event of unforeseen circumstances when it is necessary to immediately leave the vehicle, for example, in an emergency.
Alternatives:
* To warm up the engine, it is better to put the car in the “neutral” (N) position. This will disengage the transmission and allow the engine to spin without load.
* To park for a long time, put the car on the handbrake or turn on the “Parking” mode (P). This will lock the transmission and prevent the vehicle from moving.
