Stages of flushing an automatic transmission (automatic transmission)
Materials and tools:
* Transmission fluid (ATF) is the same type used in automatic transmissions
* Flushing fluid for automatic transmission
* New automatic transmission oil filter
* Keys or screwdrivers for removing the automatic transmission pan
* Clean funnel
* Liquid drain tube
*Gloves and safety glasses
Safety:
* Let the vehicle cool down before starting work.
* Ensure good ventilation as flushing fluids may be harmful.
* Wear gloves and safety glasses to protect against liquids and splashes.
Steps:
1. Preparation:
* Raise the car on a lift or use jacks and stands.
* Find the automatic transmission pan. It is usually located at the bottom of the automatic transmission.
* Clean the area around the tray of dirt and debris.
2. Draining old ATF:
* Remove the automatic transmission pan drain plug. The liquid will begin to pour out.
* Allow the liquid to drain completely into the container.
* Install a new drain plug with a new gasket. Tighten the plug to the recommended torque.
3. Removing the automatic transmission pan:
* Unscrew the bolts or screws securing the automatic transmission pan.
* Carefully remove the pan, being careful not to damage the gasket.
* Drain the remaining liquid from the pan.
4. Cleaning the pan and automatic transmission filter:
* Clean the automatic transmission pan from old gasket, dirt and sawdust.
* Replace the automatic transmission oil filter with a new one.
5. Installing the automatic transmission pan:
* Install a new automatic transmission pan gasket.
* Apply sealant to the gasket if recommended by the manufacturer.
* Install the automatic transmission pan and tighten the bolts or screws to the recommended torque.
6. Filling the automatic transmission with new ATF:
* Fill the automatic transmission with new ATF through the fluid filling tube.
*Check the ATF level using the ATF dipstick. The level should be between the ‘MIN’ and ‘MAX’ marks on the dipstick.
7. Starting the engine:
* Start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes.
* Shift the gear selector to all positions to pump new ATF through the automatic transmission.
8. Repeated draining and filling of liquid:
* Turn off the engine and drain about half of the fresh ATF as in step 2.
* Add the same amount of new automatic transmission fluid.
* Start the engine and let it idle for 15-20 minutes.
* Shift the gear selector to all positions several times.
9. Final draining, rinsing and filling:
* Turn off the engine and drain the flushing fluid again.
* Fill with fresh ATF and check the level using the dipstick.
* Start the engine and let it idle for another 15-20 minutes.
* Shift the gear selector to all positions.
10. Checking ATF level and adjusting:
* Check the ATF level using the dipstick.
*Add fluid as necessary to maintain level between ‘MIN’ and ‘MAX’ marks.
11. Resetting the fluid aging counter:
* On some vehicles, it is necessary to reset the automatic transmission fluid aging counter after flushing. Consult your vehicle’s owner’s manual for details.
12. Test drive:
* Take a short test drive to check the operation of the automatic transmission.
* Listen for unusual noises or vibrations that may indicate problems.
