Extreme driving with an automatic transmission in the snow
Warning: Extreme driving on slippery surfaces can be dangerous and is not recommended for inexperienced drivers. Practice in a controlled environment before attempting such maneuvers on a public road.
1. Selecting transmission mode:
* Snow Mode (if equipped): Optimizes gear shifting for maximum traction on slippery surfaces.
* ‘Manual’ mode (if equipped): Allows manual gear selection, providing greater flexibility and control.
2. Gear shift technique:
* Wheel Slip: Use a lower gear to increase traction and limit wheel slip.
* Downshifting in slippery conditions: Helps slow the vehicle and improve skid control.
* Use kick-down mode: When you press the gas pedal hard, the transmission shifts to a lower gear, providing maximum torque for acceleration.
3. Skid control:
*Loss of front axle traction (understeer): Turn the steering wheel slightly toward the skid and take your foot off the gas pedal.
* Loss of rear axle traction (skidding): Immediately turn the steering wheel in the direction of skidding and gradually release the gas pedal.
4. Braking:
*Use pulse braking: Press and release the brake pedal to prevent wheel locking and maintain control.
* Do not use Park (P) mode as a braking device: This may cause damage to the transmission.
5. Other tips:
* Turn the wheels in the direction of the skid: This will help the car regain traction.
* Increase your following distance: Leave more space between you and other vehicles to have time to react to slippery conditions.
* Don’t panic: Stay calm and focused on the road.
* Practice: The best way to improve your driving skills in extreme conditions is to practice.
