Types of automatic transmission cooling in Toyota Corolla 150

Toyota Corolla 150 was produced with two types of automatic transmission cooling:

* Cooling via radiator
* Cooling via heat exchanger in the main radiator

Cooling via radiator

In systems with an automatic transmission radiator, the fluid is cooled separately in a separate radiator, which is usually installed in front of the main engine radiator.

Cooling via a heat exchanger in the main radiator

In these systems, the automatic transmission fluid is cooled through a heat exchanger built into the main engine radiator.

Symptoms of a faulty automatic transmission cooling system

* Automatic transmission overheating
* Gear slippage
* Difficulty shifting gears
* The appearance of a burning smell from the automatic transmission

Automatic transmission cooling system maintenance

To maintain proper operation of the automatic transmission cooling system, it is recommended to perform the following actions:

* Check the automatic transmission fluid level regularly.
* Change the automatic transmission fluid according to the intervals specified in the vehicle’s owner’s manual.
* Clean the automatic transmission radiator (if equipped).
* Check for leaks in the system.

Replacing the automatic transmission heat exchanger

If the heat exchanger fails or becomes clogged, it must be replaced. Here are the general steps for replacing an automatic transmission heat exchanger:

1. Remove the engine protective cover, if equipped.
2. Disconnect the drive shafts from the automatic transmission.
3. Disconnect the automatic transmission cooling pipes from the radiator and heat exchanger.
4. Remove the bolts securing the heat exchanger to the radiator or automatic transmission housing.
5. Install the new heat exchanger and tighten the bolts.
6. Connect the automatic transmission cooling pipes to the radiator and heat exchanger.
7. Reinstall the drive shafts and tighten the bolts.
8. Reinstall the engine protection cover.
9. Fill with fresh automatic transmission fluid and check the level.
