Heat exchanger automatic transmission Honda Civic 4D

Purpose:

The automatic transmission heat exchanger provides cooling of the transmission fluid (ATF) and maintains the optimal operating temperature of the automatic transmission.

Design:

* Tubular heat exchanger with a coil passing through the engine cooling radiator.
* ATF circulates through the coil, absorbing heat from the engine coolant.
* Since engine coolant is typically cooler than ATF, heat is transferred from the ATF to the coolant.

Location:

* At the bottom of the engine cooling radiator.
* Connected to the automatic transmission by two hoses: supply and return.

Symptoms of malfunction:

* Automatic transmission overheating due to insufficient cooling.
* Coolant impurities in ATF.
* ATF leaking through heat exchanger connections.

Replacement:

Replacing the automatic transmission heat exchanger may be required in the following cases:

* Leaks or cracks in the heat exchanger.
* Low cooling efficiency.
* ATF contamination from coolant.

The replacement procedure includes:

* ATF drain.
* Disconnecting the hoses connecting the heat exchanger to the automatic transmission.
* Removing the heat exchanger from the radiator.
* Installing a new heat exchanger and tightening connections.
* Refilling the automatic transmission with ATF.

Maintenance:

Regular maintenance of the automatic transmission heat exchanger includes:

* Visual inspection for leaks or damage.
* Cleaning the external surface from debris.
* Periodic replacement of ATF and automatic transmission filter.
