Center differential automatic transmission

The center differential in an automatic transmission (automatic transmission) is a mechanical device that distributes torque between the driving axles of the car. It is used in four-wheel drive vehicles to ensure even power distribution and prevent wheel spin.

Operating principle

The center differential consists of gears and a housing. The drive shaft, which transmits torque from the engine to the automatic transmission, is connected to the differential housing. From the differential housing, rotation is transmitted to the driven gears, which are connected to the drive axles.

When the car is moving straight, the drive axles rotate at the same speed and the differential remains stationary. However, when turning, the wheels on the inside of the turn begin to turn slower than the wheels on the outside. To compensate for this speed difference, the differential housing begins to rotate, allowing the inside axle to rotate slower and the outside axle to rotate faster.

Types of center differentials

There are several types of center differentials, each of which has its own advantages and disadvantages:

*A locking differential completely locks the differential, causing both drive axles to rotate at the same speed. This provides maximum traction but may be undesirable at high speeds.
* The limited-slip differential automatically locks when one wheel slips, providing increased traction without completely locking up.
* A limited slip differential limits the speed difference between the drive axles, preventing wheelspin in normal driving but allowing some wheel slip during cornering.
* The asymmetric differential distributes torque unevenly between the drive axles, transferring more power to the axle with the best traction.
* The Torsen differential uses worm gears to distribute torque, providing progressive locking when the wheels slip.
